Cannabis tourism is leisure travel where marijuana is legal with the intention of enjoying its consumption while away in retreat. This industry is booming as nations around the world follow suit in legalizing the medicinal plant. At the moment, a total of 19 states and Washington, D.C., have legalized recreational cannabis. In May 2022, Forbes published a profile on the growing industry titled “Cannabis Tourism Is Now A $17 Billion Industry—And It’s Just Taking Off,” which highlights the increase in Bud-and-Breakfast, cannabis farm tours, and smoking- friendly hotels. Hospitality brands are beginning to understand that in order to stay competitive, they too need to embrace cannabis-friendly travel. In the meantime, here are the seven of the top cannabis-friendly hotels around the world.
1. Casa Stefano (Oceania del Polonio, Uruguay)
Uruguay is the first Latin American nation to legalize marijuana. In 2021, elected officials were deciding on whether to capitalize on the cannabis tourism indurry by allowing foreign visitors to buy cannabis. However, the online directory for cannabis friend lodging, Bud and Breakfast have more than 20 options in the country listed for bookings. Casa Stefano is located in the beach town of Oceania del Polonio. It is an Italian-inspired bungalow designed by architect Cosimo Venti. Grill your catch of the day on the wood-burning patio, where you’re also free to enjoy cannabis, before drifting off to sleep to the sounds of waves crashing just steps away from one of two bedrooms. The home consists of two bedrooms, two bathrooms, a kitchen, a living room, a fireplace, an outdoor grill, and a large deck with a splendid sea view.
2. Stoke Surf House (San Sebastian, Spain)
Stoke Surf House in San Sebastian, Spain is perfect for those who love to spend time in the water. This 420-friendly hotel offers daily surf and yoga lessons and allows guests to consume weed on the hotel terrace. The vibe at Stoke Surf is more of a communal environment. While weed is not technically legal in Spain, it has been decriminalized for years.
3. Thompson Seattle (Seattle, Washington)
The Tompson Hotel is home to cannabis culinary expert and executive chef Derek Simcik. At the moment, the property does not list information on its website or offer details on the property. However, travelers can inquire at the concierge desk if they’d like to book Simcik to cater a private, elevated dinner party of any size, held in an unaffiliated event space nearby.
4. The Bulldog Hotel (Amsterdam, Netherlands)
Everyone has heard about the infamous cannabis coffee shops in Amsterdam. However, it’s still illegal to consume in a hotel, and the Airbnb pickings are slim. However, the infamous Bulldog Hotel offers a roof terrace and the lobby Lounge bar where tourists can partake. Pro tip: book the Private Suite if you would rather not sleep in one of their hostel-style rooms.
