First medical marijuana sold in Mississippi

History was made Wednesday in Brookhaven.The Cannabis Company was the first dispensary in Mississippi to sell medical marijuana — but not without a few growing pains. The sale was delayed Wednesday afternoon at the dispensary on Brookway Boulevard because of what officials believe was a problem between a point of sale system MERTC, a National company that tracks cannabis from seed to sale. The issues were resolved and sales were underway.Earlier in the day, River Remedy, “a boutique medical cannabis company” in Byram, began distributing medical marijuana to dispensaries across the state. To be able to buy medical marijuana in Mississippi, patients must visit a physician, nurse practitioner or optometrist participating in Mississippi’s medical cannabis program to determine if they have a qualifying medical condition. If so, they must register certification for medical cannabis use with the state’s cannabis program. Within 60 days of medical certification, the patient must apply to the Medical Cannabis Program using an online form. They will receive an electronic identification card that can be used at a medical cannabis dispensary.Once approved, they will be allowed to buy 3.5 grams a day, six days a week. That’s about 3 ounces each month. Almost one year ago, Gov. Tate Reeves signed the bill that legalized the use of medical marijuana in the state of Mississippi. The program is administered by the Mississippi State Department of Health, and cities and counties were given the opportunity to opt out. Mississippi voters approved a medical marijuana initiative in 2020. The state Supreme Court later overturned the initiative, ruling that Mississippi’s initiative process is outdated.
